Louis Armstrong: Black Flag & Blues Shirt

A mashup design combining my love for punk and jazz music inspired by the Louis Armstrong quote - “I don’t have no fuckin’ flag other than a black flag,” I originlly heard this quote in the documentary
Louis Armstrong's Black & Blues when Armstrong is discussing race and his relationship with it. The movie features lots of self recorded monologues from Armstrong to communicate his thoughts and views. These recordings really highlight how intelligent and punk Armstrong is outside of being such an influential musican. This is why presenting Armstrong through a punk lens came so natural. 

Fire of Love

Concept Fire of love is a docuemntary about French volcanologists, Katia and Maurice Krafft. It tells the story of their love for each and their volcanic excursions through footage the they shot. The footage is absolutely gorgeous and goes from terrifying shots of volcanoes to postmodern shots of the Kraffts that feel like the inspiration for Wes Anderson. The Kraffts documented their excursions for two decades before losing their lives to a volcanic erruption in 1991. To celebrate the Kraffts, I wanted to create packaging for a VHS tape as if the Kraffts had gotten to release their archived footage themselves.



A Love Supreme

Despite playing Saxaphone in my youth - I wasn’t very good - it took me a while to become knowledgable and a proper enjoyer of Jazz music. My first jazz love was the scores of Vince Guaraldi (thanks Charlie Brown). However as I got deeper into the genre I got into John Coltrane. This project is one of my earliest and was excluded from my portfolio for a while. However the project was brought out of retirement after buying the live version of A Love Supreme on vinyl from Common Beat Music. Upon returning to this project with a fresh pair of eyes, I found it was better than I remembered and surprisingly, reflected the style of work I evolved into wanting to do.

East Coast Concrete

Concept East Coast Concrete was a challenge I set for myself to do more branding and logo design, but specifically for a blue collar work force. I feel in a time where technology is growing at such a rapid pace, that essential workers and blue collar workers do not get the credit their due. For this project I wanted to create a timeless branding that could be respected by generations of workers. To achieve this, I created a lettermark logo and custom typogrphy to go along with it in style of modernism.


Funkadelic: Maggot Brain Shirt

I was first put on to Funkadelic by coworker, who was a vinyl DJ in the 1980’s. The first song I heard was Get Off Your Ass & Jam off of Let’s Take It To The Stage, and I absolutely loved it. The song opens with a terrifying guitar and the album art looks like something off a Grateful Dead bootleg - I was sold. From there I listened to Funkadelic’s essential album Maggot Brain and loved it. The album is full of sinister earworms and some of the best psychedlic funk. The album art for Maggot Brain features a womens head sticking out of the ground which reminded me of zombies flicks and who does them better than George Romero. This connection inspired me to create a shirt design for Maggot Brain in style of Dawn Of The Dead.

Concept Nina: Wine Bar is my first post-grad project. This project was done to highlight my skills and all I had learned, everything from branding to custom typography to layout design. It was also meant to revitalize myslef as I was burnt out after graduation and took a brief break. However, I got really into this project and absolutely loved doing it and designing again. This passion reuslted in this being my largest porject and I could not be happier with the results.
